With the proposed mega Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) project at Baliapal facing resistance from a section of locals for long, the North Orissa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) has demanded that the State Government expedite the land acquisition process for the project.
The integrated refinery and petrochemicals facility project would boost economy of northern region and the entire State as well. The project would generate employment opportunities and encourage ancillary industries and units, NOCCI convenor Amit Behera told a Press conference.
He expressed unhappiness saying that some fringe elements are opposing the land acquisition process for vested interests. “The encroachers’ apprehension of eviction without compensation has fuelled oppositions to stall the project,” he pointed out.
The NOCCI has also urged the HPL authorities to start the project work in minimum possible land area, said Harish Patel and CP Bharatiya.
The Idco is assigned to acquire 3,320 acres of land for the Rs 78,225-crore project. After completion, the project would provide jobs to around 10,000 people.
It would produce 1.6 mtpa of paraxylene and 2.5 mtpa of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and light naphtha and petrol.
