The Gurugram district administration is providing lunch and dinner to around 1.72 lakh migrant workers every day amid the Covid-19 lockdown.

Officials of the administration also claimed that around 77 relief centres or shelter homes are being run by the administration for migrant workers or other poor families so that no one dies of hunger.

According to the administration officers around 56 relief centres have been set up under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation Gurugram alone, while 2 relief camps are running in Sohna and 4 relief camps in Pataudi area.

Apart from these, 15 relief camps are being run in rural areas of the district.

“Food is being provided to people living in the relief camp twice a day. On average, more than 1.68 thousand cooked food packets and dry ration packets are being distributed in the district every day.

Also, labourers, plumbers, street vendors, rickshaw pullers or any other person who need food items can dial helpline number 1950 of the administration,” said Amit Khatri, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Gurugram.

"We have issued a helpline number 8375946643 to stop illegal hoarding of essential items and black marketing across the district," he added.

Officials also added that the food distribution process is conducted by the officers of the Municipal Corporation, District Red Cross Society and Volunteers of Civil Defence. Executive Engineer level officers have been entrusted with the responsibility of delivering and maintaining food in relief centres in the municipal area.

The DC also informed that many NGOs, community kitchens and Gurudwaras are also cooperating in relief work. According to him, 12 such institutions in the municipal area alone are helping to feed the needy people.

The Deputy Commissioner said that in addition to the resources of the district administration in the rural area, the gram panchayats are also supporting a lot.

“Food camps are being run in 36 places in rural areas, out of which 15 are relief camps, where people can stay. About 44 thousand food packets are being distributed daily in the rural area alone.

Similarly, two shelter homes are being run in Sohna urban area, in which about 3 thousand people are being fed daily. One shelter home is being run in Pataudi and Heli Mandi municipal areas and 2 shelter homes in Farrukhnagar where 700 to 800 people are being provided food every day.

“We have appealed to the people of the district Gurugram to generously help the migrant labourers, daily wage labourers and other poor people, as they have contributed a lot in a development in Gurugram. Also, people should stay inside their homes, observe social distancing and also maintain their full cooperation with the district administration,” Khatri said.
