Police on Friday evening busted a gang that used to dupe jewellers by selling them duplicate gold jewellery. The City police arrested four persons from Makdumpur area within limits of Balidih police station while few other gang members are yet to be nabbed.
The cops came into action after Manoj Kumar of Sector-ll filed a complaint of cheating with City police against the gang a few days ago for cheating him of Rs 2.5 lakh.
“After he filed a complaint, we tracked down the accused to Makdumpur and nabbed them,” said Gyan Ranjan, Deputy Superintendent of police(City ).
“When questioned, the accused admitted to have duped some other people in similar fashion. Their mobile phone details too revealed that they were in touch with some other people,” added Gyan Ranjan.
The arrested persons have been identified as Abdul Hamid, Hanif Ali, Saijuddin Parmanik and Saijul Parmanik. They belonged to Dubri district in Asam. While some other members are yet to be nabbed.
Abdul Hamid and Hanif Ali are the masterminds of the racket and Saijuddin used to meet the victims and convince them to buy the gold biscuits.
“Their modus operandi was simple. They used to convince the local residents that they had gold and would sell it at prices lower than the market price.
Once the resident Manoj Kumar gave cash, they used to hand him over duplicate gold biscuits,” DySP added.
When the jeweller learnt that he had been duped and tried to get his money back, the gang members used to threaten them.
Others too fell to the same trick as he was shown gold biscuits by the gang and convinced to pay money.
