A day after the Commissionerate police announced tough action against the extortion mafias, the cops on Saturday arrested gangster Sandeep alias Raja Acharya on the charge of demanding protection money.
The anti-extortion wing of the city police arrested the gangster; and he was questioned at the Capital police station.
“Raja was extorting Rs 20,000 from a person every month in connection with construction of a house. We are currently questioning him,” informed Commissioner of Police Sudhanshu Sarangi.
“Extortion (Dada Bati) is a serious issue and strict action will be taken against those indulging in such crime,” Sarangi said.
He also requested the residents of the twin city of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to inform police if somebody asks them for extortion money.
He assured that the complainant’s name would be kept a secret.
Meanwhile, the denizens have welcomed the crackdown by police and said such drive should be carried throughout the year instead of during the Puja festivities.
