Govt reserves gunny sacks only for PDS shops

To meet the requirements of 'bardana' (gunny sacks) for the Kharif crop marketing year 2020-21, the Chhattisgarh government has reserved the use of gunny sacks only for the Public Distribution System (PDS), it was announced on Wednesday.

The government directed the ration shop owners and managers of cooperative societies to deposit all the empty paddy sacks to the cooperatives, an official release added.

Except government fair price shops, the paddy sacks cannot be used anywhere else, the Department of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection said in the release.

Food Department Secretary Dr. Kamalpreet Singh has instructed all district Collectors to ensure the complete collection of all PDS paddy sacks.

He asked the Registrar of Cooperatives to issue guidelines for appropriate use of PDS paddy sacks in the societies.

Meanwhile, the Surajpur district administration called a meeting of Managers of Cooperative societies and enquired about the stock of gunny sacks in PDS shops and instructed them to speedily deposit the used empty paddy sacks.
