The Uttar Pradesh government will come down hard on people violating new rules under Epidemic Disease Act for compulsory face mask and ban on pillion riding on two-wheelers.
Till date, over 5,000 errants have been charged and around Rs 15 lakh collected as fine.
Government officials said that 5,298 people were fined for not wearing face mask in public places and the highest 1,461 offenders were found in Lucknow, where they had to pay a fine of Rs 100 each.
In Varanasi too, 1,306 people were fined for not wearing face masks.
Similarly, the police have apprehended 18,244 people in the state so far and have collected fine totalling Rs 14.90 lakh for pillion riding on two-wheelers.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi told news person in Lucknow on Saturday that the government would not spare anyone violating norms made to safeguard the lives of people from coronavirus pandemic.
Under the new rules, a fine of Rs 100 will be imposed for first two times for not wearing face mask in public places and for pillion riding. Thereafter, the fine will be jacked up to Rs 500 every time.
On the other hand, the government also registered 38,472 FIRs for violating lockdown norms, particularly in hotspots and Rs 24.60 lakh was collected from violators as fine.
There are 863 hotspots in the state under 485 police stations covering 7.80 lakh houses with 43 lakh inhabitants.
