HC seeks reply from UEPPCB in four weeks

Saturday, 11 January 2020 | PNS | Nainital

Hearing on a public interest litigation regarding pollution being generated by factories in the state, the high court of Uttarakhand has directed the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) to submit its reply within four weeks.

The high court division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Kumar Verma has also asked the board to state which steps have been planned to mitigate pollution in the future. During the hearing on Friday, the UEPPCB informed the court that land has been identified in Tehri and Almora districts for setting up two bio-medical waste treatment plants in the state.

In addition to this, letters have been sent to governmental and non-government institutions, asking them to set up treatment plants. It is pertinent to mention here that Udham Singh Nagar resident Himanshu Chandola had filed a public interest litigation in the high court.

The petitioner had stated that more than 32 factories are functioning in the Udham Singh Nagar and Pantnagar areas.  The operation of these factories is generating air pollution in the areas, the petitioner had contended. It is worth mentioning here that while successive State Governments have been focusing efforts on encouraging industrial development in the state, affected locals and observers have repeatedly pointed out at the lack of measures to curtail industrial pollution. On the other hand, members of the industrial fraternity aver that they are observing the necessary regulations.
