An international conference, 'Healthy Ageing 2020,' was organised by the GeriCaRe (Geriatric Care and Research Organisation) here recently. Over 500 delegates attended.
Dr Yohko Maki from Japan talked about ‘promotion of a dementia-friendly community and extension of healthy life expectancy in Japan’ and compared with the situation in India. Dr David Jolley from the UK spoke about approaches to reduce the incidence of cognitive decline and dementia. Dr Gopalakrishna Pemmaraju talked about ‘ageing joints and remedies' while Dr Biswa Mishra talked about prevention of diabetes mellitus.
Dr PT Sivakumar from NIMHANS, Bangalore, discussed the public health priority of preventing late life depression and suicide.
Dr Saamdu Chetri from IIT, Kharagpur, talked how knowing the self could prepare one to age in happiness. He discussed mindfulness techniques.
The topics were well received by the audiences. The conference was coordinated by Dr Nilamadhab Kar, Dr Prasanta Mohapatra, Dr Susanta Kumar Padhy, Dr Tushar Kanti Das and Dr Aparna Prasanna.
