1 dies as truck overturns in Ganjam

Brahmapur: A truck overturned at Taptapani Ghat under the Patapur police station in Ganjam district on Sunday night killing the helper and leaving the driver critically injured. The maize-laden truck was on its way to Brahmapur from Chandragiri area. The driver lost control over the wheels, following which the truck hit an electric pole and turned turtle. While the helper died on the spot, the driver was rescued by police and shifted to hospital.

ailing elephant dies under treatment in Angul

Angul: An ailing female elephant found unconscious in a paddy field in the Khamar Forest Range under Pallalhara block in Angul district died on Monday. The jumbo was undergoing treatment at the farmland, but the veterinarians failed to save her life. The body of the elephant will be sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of the death.

Rs 1L looted from bike side-box at Baripada

Baripada: Miscreants allegedly looted Rs 1 lakh from the side-box of a contractor’s motorcycle at Badabazar here on Monday. The contractor Jeevan Kumar Dandapat of Ward-17 had withdrawn the amount from Bank of India and kept it in the side-box of the motorbike. Dandapat parked the vehicle and went to a shop, during which a person wearing a mask broke open the side-box and decamped with the cash with the help of his associate by a motorcycle. Dandapat lodged a complaint with police. Efforts were on by cops to apprehend the looters.

Cows worshipped, fed in B’pur

Brahmapur: On the eve of the auspicious festival of the Gopalashtmi festival, members of the Marwari Mahila Samiti in association with the Sabujo Bahini here served the injured cows at veterinary hospital and provided them food. They worshipped cows at the Pataleshwar temple and Aga Sai Krishna Gosala and fed them. Then they planted trees at the Swarg Dwar cremation ground near the Neelkantheshwar temple.

Fire breaks out at Bargarh paediatric ward

Bargarh: A major fire broke out at the paediatric ward of the old building of Bargarh District Headquarters Hospital late on Sunday night in which properties worth lakhs were gutted. Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flames after an effort of about three hours. The reason behind the outbreak of fire was yet to be ascertained. The ward was only being used for storage of IV fluid and medicines, which were reduced to ashes.
