The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Jai Prakash Nishad as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election slated to be held on August 24.
Nishad, is fisheries minister and a regional vice-president of the party in Gorakhpur region. His name was announced as party nominee for RS bypoll by the BJP high command on Tuesday.
The by-election is being held for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from UP after death of Samajwadi Party member Beni Prasad Verma.
The BJP nominee is set to get elected unopposed as the party has absolute majority in the UP Assembly.
August 13 is the last date for filing of nomination while scrutiny of papers will be done the next day. The last date for withdrawing papers is August 17, when the BJP nominee will be declared elected if there is no other candidate and his nomination papers are found in order.
Beni Prasad Verma died after prolonged illness on March 27. The tenure of the seat held by him is till July 4, 2022.
