MPTM screens Bangali Jatra on You Tube channel

Saturday, 11 July 2020 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

The  folk play Shitla Mangal and Bhavani Bengali Jatra style was presented on Friday  on  Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum's YouTube Channel. The folk play was presented under the direction of Shubhajit Haldhar, Kolkata.

Bengali Jatra is a journey which was practiced in Bengal from the time of Bhakti movement of Shri Chaitanya Dev, after which Jatra spread in all the places in India where the people of Bengali community reside.

When it first became popular then music was used to propagate the names of deities and go to one place from place to place. All the characters in Jatra are mythological and all the stories are based on deities. In most of the stories, it is shown how the practice of worshiping a goddess or god on earth started. This presentation is centered on the goddess Swaroop Sheetla - It was many years ago that there used to be a king named Nahusha who performed a yagna in the wish of getting a son. His false chanting led to the arrival of a terrible woman who was ugly and scary in appearance, she was named Dhumawati.

All the gods present in the yagna were getting frightened by this terrible form of Dhumavati.

Then Brahmadev ordered Dhumavati that he should come to Roop Sarovar and change his form. Dhoomvati changes her form by following Brahmadev's order and appears in front of him as a beautiful woman. Brahmadev blessed him with the cool water of his kamandal and named him Shitala.

The presentation of Bhavani is based on the Goddess Bhavani, who is the divine Shakti, the basis of all Shakti. She transforms herself into another goddess avatar according to her wish. It is nature itself that takes care of us, she is the mother. She is the consort of Lord Shiva. He incarnated the goddess Durga to kill Mahishasura and save the world from her demonic torture.

Their forms are many, but light is one. Shubhajit Haldhar has been associated with the field of Rang Karma for many years.
