Bengali Jatra is uniqye folk style of Bengal. This journey was practiced in Bengal from the time of Bhakti movement of Shri Chaitanya Dev, after which Jatra spread in all the places in India where the people of Bengali community reside.
When it first became popular then music was used to propagate the names of deities and go to one place from place to place. All the characters in Jatra are mythological and all the stories are based on deities. In most of the stories, it is shown how the practice of worshiping a goddess or god on earth started.
Jatras are usually epic four-hour-long plays, preceded by a musical concert often lasting an hour, used to attract audiences.
The dramatic performance itself is liberally interspersed dramatic monologues, songs and duet dance routines on the folk tunes, which often serve as scene transitions and sometimes mark the end of an act. Jatra plays are usually performed on stages that are open-air arenas.
