Normalcy back as lockdown eases

Tuesday, 02 June 2020 | PNS | Lucknow

A semblance of normalcy was visible in the state capital and other parts of Uttar Pradesh barring Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar as the government offices and markets opened after the unprecedented lockdown of 68 days imposed on March 24 to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The attendance in government offices was normal but there were no visitors in most of the offices and the state secretariat.

There was confusion over plying of public transport like auto and e-rickshaw. Due to lack of passengers, it is estimated that hardly 30 per cent of the public transport vehicles were on the road.

After a long gap, the power employees staged token demonstration at Shakti Bhawan after submitting a memorandum to the UP Power Corporation Limited MD against the proposed amendment in Indian Electricity Act, 2003.

Though more than 60 per cent of the country’s coronavirus fatalities have been reported from only two states, Maharashtra and Gujarat, the lockdown was strict in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile the government on Monday extended the hours for opening of liquor shops till 9 pm.

After lockdown of 40 days, the liquor vends of India-Made Foreign Liquor and country liquor opened on May 5. They were allowed to open from 12 noon to 7 pm. On Monday the time was extended to 9 pm.
