The Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK, Raipur), from the central government's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, celebrated World Environment Day in Chhattisgarh on Friday in more than 20 villages in Raipur, Gariyaband and Baloda Bazar districts by planting more than 200 trees.
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 by the United Nations along with 119 countries. It was first celebrated in 1974.
Shrikant Pandey, State Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Raipur, said this year's theme was “Celebrate Biodiversity”.
He said that Climate Change was a matter of great concern among the environmental pundits and scientists, but pollution had fallen across the world due Covid-19 lockdown. Therefore, a different theme was observed as compared to previous years.
Arpit Tiwari, District Youth Coordinator, NYK, Raipur, said that shady and fruit-bearing trees were planted after careful consideration and discussion with villagers.
Trees such as mango, amla, pomegranate, neem, guava and Java plum among others were planted in public places and near ponds and schools to ensure they benefit a maximum number of people.
He said that tree plantation and environmental awareness programmes will be continued till the end of monsoon season while following social distancing.
This initiative was supported by Lukesh Baghel, Rakesh Goswami, Pritam Nirmalkar and NYKs National Youth Volunteers including Deeksha Tiwari, Anupama, Dalima Sharma, Lakshmi Dhruv, Narendra Yadu, Ravi Shankar Verma, Vinay Jha, Heera Sahu, Sharda Pankera, Rameshwar, and Ishwar Prasad.
