Plastic surgery is not just for beauty enhancements: Sinha

Wednesday, 15 July 2020 | Divya Modi | Ranchi

Plastic surgery as is commonly believed is not just limited to making one look beautiful. It has other purposes too. On World Plastic Surgery observed on July 15, Dr Anant Sinha, CEO Devkamal Hospital, Ranchi and Chief Plastic Surgeon, shared his insights on the various kinds of surgeries done. A Cosmetic Surgery Centre at Devkamal Hospital will also be launched on the occasion.

Sinha stated that it is commonly believed that plastic surgery is only for cosmetic reasons and beauty enhancements which is a misconception. Talking about the present trend of reconstructive surgery, the surgeon said that as the name suggests it is done to repair a damaged area and bring it as close to its normal form and function as possible.

“Reconstructive surgery is restoration of either the form of the body or the function. It is not only the bones that matter but also the soft tissues which make fingers move also matter. And that’s when a plastic surgeon steps in who is trained to conduct microvascular surgeries. If a person has lost his thumb then a new one can be made. Or a person has damaged his or her face in an acid burn, we can make them an acceptable looking person after that,” said Sinha.

On the other hand aesthetic surgery is basically done to sharpen a particular feature and what is very common amongst the Bollywood celebrities. It included botox, liposuction and abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck.

“People generally go to metropolitan cities for such treatments which are  also being offered in Ranchi. For something like a breast implant, what is charged by us is approximately Rs 1.35 to Rs 1.45 lakhs for the total package. But people are willing to pay about Rs 3.5 to Rs 4 lakhs for the same treatment in a big city wherein the quality of the implant and the procedure are all the same,” added the surgeon.

The hospital also offers the biggest burn centre in the private sector across Jharkhand. It has a dedicated comprehensive burn care centre with a team of four plastic surgeons managing it.

“This is also one aspect of plastic surgery and presently there are 12 cases with us while during the last winter season there were about 32 cases,” added Sinha.

If a person is run over in a road accident and ends up with broken limbs. The orthopedic people only fix the bone where as a plastic surgeon provides the cover over the bone so that it not only heals well but the person also has a normal looking or a functional limb. If the bone is left uncovered, it is lost.

“Our motto is to ‘Save the Working Hand’. If a labourer hurts his hand while working on a machine, our job is to recreate his hand so that he can go back to work at maybe a different job profile,” said Sinha.

The facility also offers laser therapy, PRP therapy for hair loss and hair grafting. A Vampire Bridal Massage is also offered in which Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is taken from a person’s blood and infused in the face as required. Within 72 hours there is an increase in the blood supply giving the skin a glow. This looks good for about two- three weeks. Two such treatments have been done in the State capital since December 2019. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty and removal of male breast are also done.

Generally the age group for aesthetic surgery is between 17 and 24 and the cases are when one is rejected by the opposite sex. The other age group is of around 35 to 40 years is when the body form begins to lax. As many as 8- 10 chin implants are done in a year whereas a nose surgery is done at least twice a month. As many as 11,800 surgeries for a cleft lip and palate have also been at the hospital.
