PM urged against dropping of 3 NIRTAR PG courses

Saturday, 11 July 2020 | PNS | CUTTACK

The Kalinga Bikash Manch (KBM) has urged Prime Minister Modi to take urgent steps against the concerned Central authorities’ move to abolish postgraduate courses in Physiotherapy (Neurology), Physiotherapy (Paediatrics) and Occupational Therapy from the Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR).

In a memorandum to the PM, KBM president Deepak Kumar Mahanta alleged that the NIRTAR Director has made a well-calculated attempt to abolish the three important courses from the Institute. He has started the initiative by writing a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of the Utkal University urging to abolish the three courses on the ground of non-availability of faculty. But the fact is that these courses are being run for the last 10 years with almost the present number of faculties and have produced eminent Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists working in different parts of the world.

The Director has submitted the copies of the letter to the Governor, Higher Education Minister and Secretary, Controller of Examinations, Utkal University seeking their co-operation for fulfillment of his mission of abolishing the courses, read the memorandum.

The Head of the Department of Physiotherapy of SVNIRTAR intimated to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment that the present faculties of the Department of Physiotherapy are capable enough to run the Master of Physiotherapy Courses with specialties in all branches, including Neurology and Pediatrics. He requested the authorities not to discontinue the courses.

“When the Director did not get any support for his mission of abolishing the three courses, he became furious and wrote a letter to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment as a last attempt to achieve his goal. In the letter, he has mentioned that he instructed the Heads of Departments of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy for arrangement of guest faculties to run the PG courses. He too mentioned that the specialty cources were approved by the Utkal University for 2011-12 only.and the matter of running these courses has been raised in the Lok Sabha in 2019.

“If the Director becomes successful in his mission, the people of Odisha won’t be silent spectators to this drama. There will be a severe agitation throughout the State for which he will be solely responsible for the consequences,” read the memorandum.
