BJP national vice-president Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda has triggered controversies on the internet for comparing Odisha with Pakistan.
His statement against the Odisha police over detention and custodial interrogation of a journalist of his family-owned OTV has heated up the State’s politics ahead of the two Assembly by-elections.
In his opinion about ‘illegal’ arrest and assault on journalists, Panda has termed police actions as ‘fascism’ and compared enforcement of law in Odisha with that in Pakistan.
Strongly reacting to this, BJD Rajya Sabha member Dr Sasmit Patra has described Panda’s remarks as ‘unfortunate’. BJD heavyweight MLA Pranab Prakash Das has also come down heavily on Panda’s tweet for Odisha’s comparison with Pakistan.
MP Anubhav Mohanty, who trounced Panda in the Kendrapada Lok Sabha election last year, has also slammed the BJP leader for his ‘illogical’ comparison and suggested him to quit Odisha if he finds Pakistan-like atrocities in the State.Besides, there is also a storm on the microblogging site as many users have decried Panda’s statement.“Shame on you Mr Ex MP, How can you compare odisha with pakistan,You don’t have the right to live in odisha Thumbs downThumbs downThumbs down,” wrote an user AGandhi Lalatendu Parida.
Another user, Ranjan Nayak, who is a software enginee, tweeted:You lost respect for comparing Odisha to Pakistan. I fully agree with you on rest of the tweet, but you lost it when u compared Odisha to Pak.
A Twitter user, Manas Muduli, wrote: Dear Sir – Whatever is your concern, kindly don’t compare Odisha with Pakistan. You can still raise a point without bringing Pakistan into equation. Expected better from you! Thumbs downA user, iQueenSurbhi, questioned Panda for comparing Odisha with Pakistan. She wrote: Yar ye kiya kar rahe hai ye log.. how you compare state with Pakistan. Shame on @PandaJay for bringing such hate in our odisha state. Election harne ke baad lgta dimag kaam nehi kr rha JUSTICE FOR CHANDRANI
In a tweet, Anuj, a writer, exhorted all Odias to boycott Panda as well as the BJP for the statement.
Notably, Panda has lambasted Odisha police on different platforms after an OTV journalist was recently picked up by police and grilled in connection with a viral ‘fake’ sex video of Keonjhar BJD MP Chandrani Murmu.Panda also claimed that the reporter, who broke news of RTI activists’ expose of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s ‘fake’ flood review aerial survey, was arrested to restrict freedom of speech.
