Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a scathing attack on the UP government over the death of a whistle-blower, who was shot at and critically injured after he accused the former district police chief of Mahoba of demanding bribe and later succumbed at hospital.
She said the police officials were now giving’ ‘supari’ (contract killing) against those raising their voice against corruption.
‘’Tripathi’s murder raises serious questions on the functioning of the UP government....corruption and crime are at their peak in the state. The officers of this government are now giving supari to those raising voice against corruption,’’ the Congress general secretary said on Monday. “This is the dreaded form of jungle raj which the BJP claims to be Ram Rajya,” she added.
Meanwhile UP Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu and Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra were detained on Monday while they were on their way to Mahoba to meet the family of Tripathi. The Congress leaders were detained by the police in Ghatampur.
Soon after their detention, Mishra said that the incident was a classic example of jungle raj having been unleashed in Uttar Pradesh.
Indrakant Tripathi, a dealer from Mahoba who had accused a suspended Indian Police Service officer of extortion, died of gunshot wounds on Sunday evening.
Tripathi was found with a bullet wound in his neck in his car on a highway near Mahoba town last Tuesday, and had to be admitted to the critical care unit of a hospital in Kanpur. He was involved in the mining industry in Mahoba, and was shot at just a day after he issued a video statement on social media, accusing 2014-batch IPS officer Manilal Patidar of corruption, threats and intimidation.
