Witnessing the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Friday with 665 fresh infections, Punjab’s coronavirus tally breached 16000-mark. A day after surpassing 15,000-mark, the state’s COVID-19 tally stood at 16,119.
The state are recorded 16 deaths — including six from Ludhiana, three in Amritsar, two each in Barnala and Patiala and one each in Jalandhar, Pathankot and Kapurthala — pushing the death toll to 386.
The month of July has witnessed a total of 10,551 cases (66 percent of the total positive cases), and total 242 deaths (63 percent of the total deaths). On an average, the month of July reported 340 fresh cases and seven to eight deaths every day.
Continuing to register an alarming spike since almost a week, Ludhiana reported 248 fresh cases and six out of Friday’s 16 deaths — the highest figure reported by any of the state’s districts. In fact, Ludhiana’s COVID-19 tally has surpassed 3000 mark.
With 136 fresh infections, Patiala district also reported the highest single-day spike.
Besides, Amritsar reported 71 cases, followed by Pathankot (43), Barnala (32), Jalandhar (24), SAS Nagar (24), Sangrur (25), Hoshiarpur (11), Gurdaspur (1), Ferozepur (3), Tarn Taran (6), Bathinda (5), Fatehgarh Sahib (15), Moga (1), SBS Nagar (9), Kapurthala (2), Ropar (8) and Muktsar (1).
The top five districts, having more than 1000 COVID-19 cases — including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala and Sangrur — account for over 62 percent of the state’s cases. Ludhiana has total 3,211 cases, followed by 2,249 in Jalandhar, 1,863 in Amritsar, 1,719 in Patiala, and 1,056 in Sangrur.
