Following an attempt on Thursday night to extort money at gunpoint from a servitor’s family by a group of five notorious youths in Madanmohoan lane of Baliapanda,  resentment grew deep in the locality on the law enforcing agencies in Puri.

Amid confrontations, the family members caught one of the accused with other four fleeing in the dark. Before entering to house of the family in their target, they first threatened some residents in other lanes.  Police arrested a youth in injured condition who is under treatment in hospital.

It is informed that during confrontations with family the main accused fell down into a water boring system built near the wall and dashed against steel pipes by succumbing to severe injuries on his face.

For such a daredevilry, while the locals have praised the victim family, they have too taken on the law enforcing machineries for a soft corner to notorious elements who are on a sharp rise now.

As per locals, sale of drugs, alcohol and stolen bikes are rampant in Puri. In recent past, three stolen bikes were recovered from near the telephone office area.

Notably a major part of Baliapanda that comes under the Town PS limits is neglected most in respect of law and order.  The part situated far from Town PS which is also closer to Baliapanda PS includes Atibadi Niagar, Jaganath Colony, Sagar Padiary, Betrix School, Jami Khuntia and Chakrakota Saraswati Sisu Mandira area. The area is venerable to drug and alcohol peddling, extortion, theft and mid-night transfer of truckloads of sands from Government lands.
