Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi demanded that members of Tablighi Jamaat be forced to make financial reparation for spreading coronavirus across India and a criminal case be registered against Jamaat chief Maulana Mohammad Saad Kandhalvi for spreading the virus.
He also demanded that those who died from COVID-19 be cremated irrespective of caste and religion.
Rizvi said, “It is time to rise above narrow considerations of caste and religion. The bodies of COVID-19 victims be cremated and if the person happens to be Muslim then the ashes be handed over to the family for burial in a graveyard as per Islamic traditions. If the body is buried it could further spread infection and also pollute the land.”
The Shia Waqf Board official said that he had obtained a fatwa from 93-year-old Ayatollah Nasir Makrim of Iran, who ruled that any person responsible for spreading the disease would have to pay the cost.
“The fatwa says that if that person dies from the disease, then he will be held responsible,” he said.
“Even as India is fighting spread of coronavirus, it is spreading like wildfire due to religious congregation at Jamaat markaz in Delhi. As per Shariat law and Indian law, Jamaat chief Maulana Saad is solely responsible for spreading the disease and the entire cost of containing the epidemic be realised from him,” Rizvi said in a statement issued in Lucknow on Wednesday.
