The Jharkhand Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) on Saturday organised the country's first ever virtual Lok Adalat and settled disputes to the tune of Rs 54 crore.

The virtual Lok Adalat was inaugurated by Supreme Court judge, Justice Aniruddha Bose. Jharkhand High Court chief justice Dr Ravi Ranjan, Jharkhand High Court justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Jhalsa executive chairman justice Harish Chandra Mishra graced the function.

As many as 9000 cases in the pre litigation stage and around 500 cases related to insurance pending in courts were disposed of through the Lok Adalats. Special virtual benches were formed which were coordinated by the district legal services authority centres and monitored by Jhalsa.

"In this corona pandemic insurance claims are meant for persons who are in distress. Looking into people's suffering Jhalsa has come up with the idea of holding a virtual Lok Adalat," said Justice HC Mishra.

As the insurance claims of Rs 54 crore were disbursed, many beneficiaries who received cheques were happy.

Widow of policeman Rajesh Dhan who was killed in a road accident was happy to get a cheque of Rs 90 lakh. The widow's lawyer said, "In August 2018 Dhan was killed in a road accident near Chandil. After the demise of Rajesh Dhan para legal volunteers reached Rajesh Dhan' house to take up the case. On the initiative of Jhalsa the family members received the money."

Apart from Dhan’s family members, Jasim Ansari a resident of Torpa in Khunti district too received an insurance claim of Rs 5.28 lakh from the company on the initiative of Jhalsa. In 2018, Ansari who was passing through Khunti Topra road met with an accident and lost one of his leg.

Ansari was hospitalized for two months and his family members had to bear an expense of Rs 4 lakh in his medical treatment.  On the occasion apart from insurance Lok Adalat, the judges also launched the Jharkhand Vidhik Sewa Mobile app and Jharkhand Vidhik Sewa web portal.
