Secret beauty services continue at home

Monday, 06 July 2020 | Divya Modi | Ranchi

As all parlours and salons continue to remain shut, one of the biggest problems beings faced by people is personal grooming. Just like wearing masks has become a fashion statement, men and women across all age groups can be seen sporting flowing manes and facial hair. In an attempt to not just provide their services but also regain their livelihood, barbers and beauticians have started with some home services.

With social distancing becoming the new normal, these services which require physical proximity continues to remain hampered. Even though the salons have been shut for over three months, the demand for home services is still not the same.

“I work for a reputed parlour in Lalpur and would generally provide doorstep services for women on my off days or early morning hours before going to work for an extra income. Since the outbreak of the virus, my regular customers are not too keen to call me over for something like manicure and pedicure as well. It has badly hampered the business. On my day off I would at least cater to four clients but now even getting two appointments daily is a task,” said City based beauticianBabita.

“It all started when friends and neighbours requested me to cut their hair during the lockdown. And soon word spread in the nearby localities as well. I wear a mask at all times whenever a customer calls me to his house. For a haircut I ensure that the client is also wearing a mask but that cannot be possible during a shave. I decided to start providing home services for men in mid April. Though it is slow but there is no other option right now,” said Amit, who works for a salon in Main Road.

However, some beauticians also claim on getting regular calls from customers asking about home remedies.

Alka, who runs a health centre in Kanke Road said, “Regular clients have been calling to ask about the best home remedies espically for skin and hair care treatment. I receive close to a dozen calls every day and generally advice them on how to groom themselves at home. Due to the unavailability of professional products, people have once again started opting for natural remedies popularly known as ‘Dadimakenuskhe’.”
