SER produces reusable face masks, hand sanitisers in large scale

Monday, 06 July 2020 | PNS | Ranchi

All the divisional units of South Eastern Railway (SER) and Kharagapur Workshop have taken major initiatives to gear up their machineries and have produced a total number of 1,17,945 reusable face masks and 10,338 litres of hand sanitizers so far.

SER has taken elaborate measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic by making all out efforts to supplement the Health Care initiatives by producing huge numbers of face masks and sanitisers.

SER has utilised these face masks and sanitisers for safety and protection of its employees and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.

Reusable Face masks and sanitisers are being produced mainly at four divisions like Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi and Chakradharpur as well as at Kharagpur Workshop. The masks and sanitiser are being prepared under the strict supervision and guidance of the Medical Department of SER.

To provide extensive support to its employees, SER has distributed reusable face masks and hand sanitiser amongst the frontline staff like loco pilots, guards and concerned staff engaged in running of freight, parcel and special trains  for ensuring their protection from the pandemic. It has also been planned to distribute mask and hand sanitiser to all employees of SER.

Apart from the above, masks and sanitiser are also being sent to health units and hospitals over SER.  During this situation, wearing face masks and use of hand sanitiser have been made compulsory across the country. The masks are largely being made using cotton clothes with straps for adjustment and can be reused after proper washing. Hand sanitiser is generally used to decrease infectious agents on the hands.

In-house production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits have also been started at Kharagpur Workshop and Kharagpur Divisional Unit of SER for supporting the Doctors, Nurses and Health care personnel during treatment of Covid-19 affected people.

SER’s in-house production will not only ensure timely supply of the masks, sanitisers and PPEs to the frontline staff and Health Care personnel but will also result in substantial cost savings.

Meanwhile, Railway Engineers with supporting teams are engaged in track maintenance and are working round the clock to keep safe, secured and well-maintained railway track during the on-going monsoon because monitoring of tracks and allied works are continuous activity and one of the most important part of train operations..

Railway Engineers and supporting teams are continuously monitoring track maintenance works wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing for smooth running of SER’s Parcel, Freightand Special Trains considering the need of the time and greater interest of the society. The vast network of South Eastern Railway has been divided into various maintenance sections for close and thorough checkup and inspections.Security personnel are on patrol and Safety Inspectors are on constant vigil.

Railway tracks are being inspected on regular intervals to ensure that every section is fit for train operation.Adequate steps are being taken to detect any crack or other changes in the track in view of keeping the lifeline of the Country connected all the time.
