The Samajwadi Party is set to lose two more Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Part.
The elections to these seats were necessitated due to the sudden demise of two SP members.
One vacancy was created due to the death of sitting SP member Beni Prasad Verma while the other was due to SP leader Amar Singh’s recent death.
The term of both these seats ends on July 4, 2022.
The Election Commission has announced the by-election to the vacant seat of Beni Prasad Verma on August 24.
A total of 31 members are elected to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. While two seats are vacant, out of the remaining 29, Bharatiya Janata Party has 15, Samajwadi Party has 8, Bahujan Samaj Party has 4 and the Congress has 2.
The tenure of nine members ( SP 4, BJP 2, BSP 2 and Congress 1) is ending on November 25.
With only 45 MLAs in Vidhan Sabha, the SP can get only one of its candidates elected on the basis of first preference votes. The SP could win one more seat with the help of Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party votes, if they decide to vote for the SP candidate. On the other hand, the BJP can win 7-8 seats.
