A tigress and a leopard were found dead in different parts of Kumaon on Friday. According to officials, both the big cats are believed to have died due to injuries sustained in fight with other big cats.

According to departmental officials, during routine patrol on Thursday evening, the Forest department personnel spotted an injured tiger near the Jhirna water source in Jhirna range of Corbett national park. The department team started monitoring the injured big cat. On Friday, when the personnel went to check the condition of the big cat they found the tigress dead near a water source. The body of the tigress was sent to Ramnagar for post mortem examination. The sub divisional officer Kunda Singh Khati informed that it appeared as if the tigress had been injured in a fight with another big cat. All the body parts of the tigress were found intact.

The body of tigress estimated to be about seven years old was sent to the Corbett national park veterinary hospital in Ramnagar where the post mortem was conducted.

In another case, a leopard cub was found dead in the Ramnagar range of the Terai west forest division. Ramnagar ranger Harendra Rawat informed that department personnel received information on Friday morning about the body of a leopard cub being spotted in Udaipuri area. The ranger reached the site, took possession of the body and informed senior officers. According to the sub divisional officer Shishpal Singh Rawat, the leopard cub is estimated to have been nine to 10 months old and is believed to have died as a result of a fight with another leopard. There were deep claw marks on the dead cub’s head. The exact cause of the leopard’s death will be known after the post mortem report is received, he added. After the post mortem, the carcass of the cub was destroyed by the department personnel.
