Tribal outfits threaten poll boycott

Wednesday, 21 October 2020 | PNS | Ranchi

City Capital on Tuesday witnessed a sizable rally organized by different tribal outfits to pressurize the government for the ‘Sarna code’, a separate religion code which tribals have long been demanding.

As part of the agitation they decided to hold demonstrations at the Jharkhand Assembly during the winter season of the Assembly besides similar protests in Delhi to expert pressure for their demand.

Tribal priest Bandhan Tigga and educationist Karma Oraon who are leading the agitation termed their protest march as successful. A delegation of tribal leaders headed by former minister and Congress leader Gitashree Oraon also submitted a memorandum to Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu in this regard.

They also announced a poll boycott if the Governments further delay in accepting their demand.

The capital city witnessed protesters forming the human chains and carrying out a march at Albert Ekka Chowk, Main Road, the Raj Bhavan Piska, Morabadi among others. “We want the state and central government to take initiative to bring legislation for separate Sarna code. This must be done before the next census is set to take place in 2021,” said president of Adivasi Sena, Shiva Kacchap.

The protest became massive as different tribal groups like Adivasi Janparishad, All India Manjhi Pargana, Adivasi Sengal Abhiyan, Raji Parha Sarna Samiti, Adivasi Chhtra Sangh, Kendriya Sarna Samiti and others had joined it. Similar protest was simultaneously organized at all district headquarters.

Convener of Rashtriya Adivasi Dharma Samanvaya Samiti, Deo Kumar Dhan said that in 1871 the then British government had made provision for separate religion code for tribals. Dhan said that in 1951 this was removed from census.

According to tribal leaders in 2011 the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes had recommended to the Centre to add Sarna code in the 2011 Census. But the recommendation was not implemented. But despite that a large number of tribals across the country had opted for Sarna as their religion in the ‘other religion’ category of the census. As per 2011 census report, 42.35 lakh tribals of Jharkhand had mentioned Sarna as their religion.
