In a major crackdown, the Gurugram Police in a joint operation with the district Drug Control Department on Tuesday busted two big international drug rackets operating from Gurugram and seized drugs including narcotics and Covid-19 drugs worth lakhs.
According to Senior Drug Controller Officer Amandeep Chauhan, the police raided two areas, sector 57 and Sadar area, in the city, and arrested four Iraq nationals, and one woman from Uzbekistan and seized drugs worth 45 lakh, along with Rs 75 lakh in cash and a Fortuner car from their possession.
Chauhan further informed that the accused had kept the drugs in an apartment in Sector 57 of the cyber city. The seized drugs include narcotics and medicines used for treating cancer and COVID-19. The accused used to supply them illegally in the international markets.
The accused were identified as Akram Faiz (21), Aws Raad Nealmah Al Hendi (31), Mohanad (26) and Othmana (27), from Iraq and one Uzbekistan woman. The culprits used to work as translators.
The culprits, who have failed to produce any valid visas or passports, reportedly confessed trying to cash on the drug shortage in Iraq and its high rates in the black market there.
“We got a tip-off and busted the racket. Amongst the seizure is medicines which are of compassionate use for the treatment of COVID-19 and other ailments. They would procure the COVID drugs easily available on MRP from Gurugram and would send it to Iraq illegally.
These drugs are not directly available in the market. Police are taking them on remand to find out from where they are getting these drugs in India,” said Gurugram Controller Amandeep Chauhan.
The alarming thing is that in Covid-19, 48 injections of ramadasevir, which were running experimentally, were recovered. It was being bought for Rs 5,400 and sold in Iraq for Rs 1 lakh.
The police investigation revealed that the culprits were running their alleged racket since six year and the price of all drugs sold in Iraq is said to be around 3 crores.
According to state Drug Controller officers, all-district departments are on alert over black marketing attempts of COVID treatment drugs available at the MRP in Haryana.
“Amid Covid-19 we have already given necessary directions to our department officials to keep watch of the Covid treatment durgs supply chains to stop black marketing. Stern action will be taken against those involving in the same, said a senior drug controller officer.
