Saturday, 11 January 2020 | PNS | Dehradun

Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal 'Gama' made some major announcements during the board meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). He announced that the newly created wards in suburban and rural areas will have a budget of Rs 15 lakh whereas the city wards will get Rs 10 lakh for development works.

He also announced that widows will be given relaxation in house tax while leprosy patients will not have to pay house tax at all. Further, the board also passed proposals to allocate land to the state government for building of Sanya Dham and setting up a Rs five crore fixed deposit to facilitate payment of wages of the sanitation workers.

Talking about increasing the MCD’s source of income, he stated that the corporation will build some hotels, petrol pump and gas agencies after finalising land for these projects. Such endeavours will help to make the corporation financially more secure.

For public welfare, a 100-bed hospital and open gyms will be built in all the wards besides the opening of Skill Development Centre where youth can learn new skills and can get new opportunities. The plan for the construction of a sports academy will be executed too to promote sports among the youngsters of Doon.

As councillors said that information boards on construction sites are not that noticeable, it was decided that from now on the boards will comprise of red letters on a yellow background. Councillors of almost every ward put their issues before the house.

The most common issues of the councillors were ill-managed and open garbage bins, wandering stray cattle, monkey menace in the suburban and rural areas, lack of public toilets and insufficient number of sanitation workers.

Many proposals were also kept on hold in the meeting like the relaxation on property tax on the properties of Shri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission.

However the proposal of changing the names of Saharanpur Chowk to Teerthankar Bhagwan Mahavir Chowk, Darshini Gate to Shri Guru Ram Rai Darshini Gate and Laalpul Chowk to Shri Mahant Indiresh Chowk were passed by the board.

Another important issue raised by the board members was the large sums of money demanded by eunuchs from citizens on special occasions. The councillors demanded that a sum be fixed for this purpose but this was rejected.

The councillors demanded that fixed amounts be set for eunuchs so that they don’t demand more money forcing people to pay more than they can actually afford.

However, the mayor said that a committee will be formed to take a decision on this. The eunuchs will also be consulted before a decision is taken in this matter so that they do not feel as if they have been treated unfairly. During deliberation on the level of sanitation and lack of sanitation workers, the board decided to set up an annual FD of Rs five crore.

The annul interest from this will be used to pay the wages of sanitation workers. Additionally, approval was also granted for increasing the number of sanitation workers allocated for the new wards in suburban and rural areas. The board also passed the proposal for transferring  municipal land near Canal Road to the state government for building Sanya Dham to honour the martyrs of Uttarakhand. In addition, Shaheed Dwaar will also be constructed to commemorate the valour of martyrs.

In another decision expected to help in improving the level of sanitation in the city, the board passed the proposal for penalising people who throw trash in public places.

The mayor said that this will make people more aware of cleanliness and a special authority will help to do the task efficiently.

However, the municipal corporation will make sure that no misuse of power is indulged in by the organisation to which the task of penalising is handed over.

He also suggested that the councillors should take out a mini-rally every fifteen days with the school students to spread awareness regarding cleanliness and hygiene.
