Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed satisfaction over measures taken to protect and conserve the cows during his regime.
Speaking at a book release function at his Lucknow residence on Saturday, the Chief Minister said that his government not only succeeded in preventing cow-slaughter but effectively checked inter-state smuggling of cows.
“Cows were even being sent to other countries before I took over as the CM of UP. It was a huge challenge before me to protect the holy animal which I did to my ability,’’ he said
Yogi said that steps taken to protect stray cows have bore fruits and now about 5.24 lakh cattle were being kept in government-run shelters while more than 8 lakh such cattle were being housed at ‘Kanha Upvan’ - shelters run by local bodies in UP.
A day before ‘Gopashtami’, Yogi released a book ‘Gau-Lok Ki Ore’ authored by Shivani Sharma and underlined the religious and mythological importance of cows and said that ‘Gopashtami’ has been a tradition followed for thousands of years.
