‘Music is my therapy’

‘Music is my therapy’

Singer SHANNON K’s single, I Do, is doing rounds on the Internet. She speaks with MUSBA HASHMI about how she juggles work and academics, advice she takes from father Kumar Sanu and why trolling and bullying is a subject for her song

What is your recent single I do about?

All my previous songs have been about the different stages of love but this was something that I hadn’t done before. The concept of remembering someone you loved after you’ve separated and wanting the best for them is beautiful. You remember them but you also remember how difficult it was for both of you to understand each other and that you didn’t know what you were doing wrong at the time so you blamed them. You know now that you weren’t the victim so you just want them to be happy with whoever they’re with now. It reflects on the saying that if you love someone you should let them go. With that in mind my entire team came up with these beautiful ideas of how we can present and convert this meaning visually and I think they did an amazing job at that.

I am the queen from Casino also released recently. How different was it to sing a track for webseries?

It was certainly a new experience  for me to sing for a web series. I had fun working on the project and learning things along the way. I feel like if you know and understand the meaning behind the song it’ll be easier for you to emote the emotions through lyrics and style of music.

Is it hard to juggle between singing and studying?

It wasn’t hard to juggle between my music and studying since music for me is like a therapy and I’ve never really been good at studies. Although my parents priorities were always for me to complete my studies first which I did so now I can focus a bit more on music.

You have been vocal about the ills of trolling and bullying. You also released a song Give Me Your Hand. What made you pick this subject?

Give Me Your Hand  was written by my sister, Annabel and I. It was beautifully produced by Kyle Townsend. The song talks about my experiences of how I faced bullying, along with that this songs gives a beautiful message about not losing hope and fighting for yourself and being nothing but your true self. I realised that there must be thousands of people out there who are still struggling to raise their voices about the issue and we tend to ignore it, which is why I wrote this song to tell them that they aren’t alone. I’m grateful and thankful to my fans who showed so much love and appreciation to the song which led to me receiving an award. I think that the song has paved a way for me to connect with people. I’m all for supporting people in tough times and the fact that so many of them overcome their depression by listening to the song makes me feel happy. There’s a quote of mine: You are made for a reason, to shine!

You made your Bollywood debut with Duggi. How did that happen?

It was an entirely new experience working in Bollywood. Initially, I was nervous to step into Bollywood. I am not that fluent in Hindi but I somehow managed to understand the meaning of the song. It was super fun working with Himesh Reshammiya. He’s an amazing producer and all his songs are absolutely phenomenal.

A song that you can play on loop.

There are so many songs that are on a loop for me but I’d have to say it is Everything I Do, I Do It for you by Bryan Adams. I love classic songs because they always inspire me to learn and  think more creatively when it comes to my own songs. Also who doesn’t love Bryan Adams!

An advice from your father that you abide by.

My dad always advised me to never be a replica of someone but to learn the qualities from the legends and have an input of your creative style in it so that you become a unique artist. I also take recording and performing advice from dad. He is very strict when it comes to music so I make sure that I do my best in whatever that I am doing.

What are your upcoming projects?

My new single is on its way and some other songs from Bollywood too. So I am super excited and geared up for the future!
