KANISHK VARMA, director of Footfairy which has released on &pictures yesterday, speaks with MUSBA HASHMI about the film and why he chose to release it on TV
What is Footfairy about?
The film is about a hunt for a serial killer. He specifically hunts girls who travels along western railway line. He is a very smart killer who doesn’t leave any footprints or fingerprints whatsoever. This becomes a challenge for the cops to trace him down. The story is about whether he gets caught or not.
Why release it on TV?
This was absolutely the producer’s call and we felt this was the right direction to go towards. After many years , a film has been released directly on TV. We were confident that this movie has the right blend of everything and can be released as &pictures original.
Some memories from the sets.
It was like a blast. The best I could remember is that sometimes we didn’t feel the pressure of the time or the budget constraint. It was like a well-oiled machine, everything was well-planned and executed. The actors performed brilliantly and it helped me as a director as well. The schedule of the movie was for 34 days, but we managed to finish it in 30 days only. The entire process was fun. The most fun part was that I got to shoot at a railway station and a full train was under my control.
Crime thrillers are one of the most popular genres. What makes them so sought-after?
Mystery and crime thrillers are popular for decades now. As a society we like to watch the dark part of the human behaviour. We don’t want to experience such a thing, but as a society we take pleasure in watching such things. So is the case with gangster movies. We get attracted towards bad things, but we are only happy about it till we see it from a distance.
What next?
I was busy shooting for Inside Edge Season 3 for Excel and Amazon. It is currently in the post-production stage and should be out soon. There is another show which I am developing for Viacom and is based on Burari murder. Then there is a feature film which I can’t talk about in detail right now.
