A healthier twist

Here is a refreshing take on that immensely popular street food, momos

Momos. The very term might make your tastebuds water, remind you of a nook opposite your college or your residence street, where some good memories were made, with tears in eyes — nothing emotional here, just the red chilli hot peppers in the momo chutney!

While right now, heading out to grab a plate of momos might seem a little non-viable, maybe impossible, why not try making them at home? And since home means good health, why not give the otherwise ‘unhealthy’-labelled snack a healthier twist? Also, looking at the current scenario, consciousness about hygiene has been growing and in these times of Coronavirus, ordering outside food could be sometimes, next to ordering trouble. So here are some tips as to how to go about it as well as some Himalayan delicacies for the food lovers with a range of momos and other traditional delicacies from Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal and Ladakh.

Vegan

  • Nut-free
  • Soy-free
  • With exotic vegetables filling of beetroot, spinach, corn and mushrooms

Gluten-free

  • Potato starch dumplings for guilt-free cravings
  • In crystal chicken, spicy shrimp, vegetable and water chestnut

Whole wheat

  • Cook 100 per cent atta momos
  • Could be tried with fillings of Tibetan pork, Nepali chicken, and spinach, garlic and cheese for vegetarians

Thupka

  • Healthy and nutritious Tibetan soup with a twist of momos
  • With exotic vegetables, Nepali chicken and spicy pork

Malaysian laksa

  • Rich and spicy coconut curry broth with choice of momos immersed in it
  • With exotic vegetables, chicken and pork

With these new variations, momos can certainly become appetizing with different choices such as veggies, lamb, pork and chicken.

Remember, a healthy momo does not only satisfy the cravings but also maintain a balanced diet!
