Tamil Nadu logs 15,108 new cases of Covid-19

Sunday, 13 June 2021 | Kumar Chellappan | CHENNAI/KOCHI:

Tamil Nadu logged 15, 108 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday as the Directorate of Health and Preventive Medicine tested 1.82 lakh persons across the State. The pandemic claimed 374 lives taking the death toll in the State to 29,280 till date.

The total lock down in the State has started yielding results as the number of new cases registered every day show a decrease. Chennai, which used to be a hotspot, recorded 989 new cases on Saturday while the industrial hub of Coimbatore tested 1982 new cases making the district top the table. Its neighbors Erode (1353) and Tirupur (844) continued to be areas of concern for the administration as these three districts constitute the main industrial and business hub of Tamil Nadu.

Test Positivity Rate in the State too has shown a remarkable climb down from 13 per cent to 9 per cent in the week that ended Friday.

Situation in neighboring Kerala remained critical despite the fall in the number of new cases diagnosed with the pandemic. While 13,832 persons tested positive on Saturday across the State, 171 succumbed to the pandemic. Though the average TPR across the State showed 12.72 per cent, the powers that be were reluctant to describe the situation as normal. Kerala’s test to isolate the COVID affected remained low as on Friday the State had tested 1.08 lakh samples.
