One of the main spin-offs of Covid-19 pandemic was the on-line classes launched by the Government of Kerala. This innovative system of teaching became popular all over the State as the Government ordered the shut-down of schools and colleges to keep the students away from the marauding virus that had claimed more than 46,000 lives till date.
But an attempt is being made by vested interest to derail the on-lines system citing lame excuses, according to leading educationists.
Though some teachers had reservations, on-lines classes were widely accepted as an effective tool than conventional class rooms. Though students missed their campus life, which included the daily quarrels over non-issues, banters, peer camaraderie and the “anthakshari” events during class breaks, a majority of them as well as teaching faculties welcomed on-line system of education which they found to be more effective than traditional classes.
“Initially, I had reservations about the efficacy of the on-line classes. But it proved that I as well as the principal of the school could monitor the functioning of the classes, the quality of teaching as well as the performance of the students. Now I prefer on-line classes,” said Jayaprakash Valiathan, director, Vidhyadhiraja Vidyapeetam Higher secondary School, Mavelikkara. He found that teachers and students were happy that they need not commute the distance daily and could attend classes from their homes itself.
