Explosive growth in Covid cases, deaths

With the Covid-19 cases spiking mostly in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, the country on Tuesday breached its previous single-day high and recorded 1,84,514 cases and 1,025 deaths during the last 24 hours. Maharashtra continued to lead the surge by reporting 60,212  cases and 281 death.

After Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh emerged as the second worst-affected State on daily rise count  as it reported 18,021  cases, followed by Chhattisgarh (15,121),  Karnataka (8,778) and Madhya Pradesh (8,998 cases). While UP saw 85 deaths and Chhattisgarh 109, Karnataka reported 67 deaths and MP saw 40 fatalities.

The situation in UP is fast going out of hands amid acute shortage of beds and medicines reported across the state.

“In the past 24 hours, 18,021 fresh cases were reported while 3,474 people were discharged in this period. There are 95,980 active cases while 6,18,293 were treated and discharged.

The state reported a total of 9,309 deaths till now since the start of the pandemic," Additional Chief Secretary of Health Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters here during his daily press briefing.

The severity of the Covid infection could be gauged from the fact that in just the first 13 days of April, the infection has increased seven times. In the last 24 hours the spike has shown a 31 per cent increase as 13,685 new infections were found on Monday and in 24 hours this number has gone up to 18021 an increase of 4336 cases.

The spike has thrown the life haywire. There is an acute shortage of beds in hospitals and there is a long wait for ambulances. The essential medicines have suddenly evaporated from the shelf of the pharmacies while there is a long queue at the cremation grounds in almost all the big cities of the state

A senior government officer Manish Dixit's daughter is admitted in a hospital and was in dire need of Remdesivir injection. A senior doctor called him up on Sunday to say that they have exhausted the stock of this injection and need injection immediately. “This injection was not available anywhere in important chemist shops Lucknow. I approached a Rs dalal’ and got the injection after paying hefty extra money,” he said.

The situation is so pathetic that even a senior IAS officer was made to wait in an ambulance for four hours before he could get a bed in SGPGI, Lucknow.  Corona's infection has wreaked havoc on the Chief Minister's office as well.  Chief Minister's OSD Abhishek Kaushik has also been infected with Corona.  In addition, a private secretary of the Chief Minister's office has been found to be Corona positive.

This forced the Chief Minister to hold Covid meeting with his Team 11 virtually on Tuesday.

In Lucknow 5382 cases were reported on Tuesday against 3892 infections found on Monday. In Prayagraj the number increased from 1295 on Monday to 1856 on Tuesday. But there is a slight reprieve in Varanasi where the number dropped from 1417 on Monday to 1404 on Tuesday. In Kanpur, the cases grew from 716 on Monday to 1271 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, UP government has appointed Bharti Singh as acting SSP of Bulandshahar as present SSP Santosh Kumar Singh was infected with Corona .  Bharti Singh, Commandant of 41st Corps PAC Ghaziabad, will hold the charge of SSP Bulandshahr till further orders.

Numbers are also going up in neighbouring Bihar, a state which remained largely unaffected by the first wave of the pandemic last year. On Tuesday, Bihar reported 4,570 fresh COVID19 cases taking the total number of active cases in the state to 20,148.

Karnataka reports 8778 new #COVID19 cases including 5500 cases in Bengaluru Urban district, 6079 discharges and 67 deaths.

Gujarat reports 6,690 new #COVID19 cases, 2748 discharges and 67 deaths. ajasthan reports 5,528 new COVID19 cases, 1,251 recoveries and 28 deaths.
