Former Congress MP and son of late President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday quit the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress.
“The way the party is running in Bengal and elsewhere is unacceptable to many of us … it is increasingly evident that the situation will change,” Mukherjee, a two-time MP and a former MLA, said.
Asserting that he had not been on any post in the Congress for the past a few years and had not been given any responsibility, Mukherjee said, “Even the primary membership which is renewed every three years has not been done in the Congress.”
“I have come from one Congress to another Congress — from one house to another, and both are almost same to me,” Mukherjee said, adding he had “requested personally to Madam Mamata Banerjee and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for a place in the Trinamool Congress… and I am happy that they have kindly allowed me to join this party.”
Earlier Mukherjee had called up the Chief Minister and requested her to name a public road and an unnamed park in Kolkata in the name of his father. “I called her up and requested her to name a public thorough fare as Pranab Mukherjee Sarani (road) and an unnamed park in my father’s name,” he said.
