Tuesday, 09 March 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

As the name suggests “Anuvartanam”, a novel initiative of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, Director, Srjan and Dean, FACIS, Sri Sri University, has been an extremely well-attended virtual performance series, bringing the entire world together to view some of the stalwarts of the Odishi dance and the talented younger ones who have been less noticed.

On March 6, the Anuvartanam celebrated its 75th anniversary with legendary dancer Aruna Mohanty, Padmashree and SNA awardee. She presented two of his own choreographies Samsara and Bhumisuta and the music for both the items was composed by Guru Bijaya Kumar Jena and Rupak Kumar Parida respectively Since its inception, Anuvartanam has featured renowned names like Sujata Mohapatra, Rajashree Praharaj, Sikata Das, Pranati Mohanty, Rahul Acharya, Namrata Mehta etc and has also featured some of the younger generation of budding talents, who, otherwise have lesser performance opportunities, to get noticed globally for their talents.

Known for his organizational skills besides his sought after choreographies, Guru Mohapatra conceptualized Anuvartanam, where he brought in the entire global Odishi community under one roof and proved to the world that no amount of obstacles could deter his undying spirit of keeping Odishi at a golden pedestal in the world cultural map. The series, that started in July 2020, when the Covid 19 pandemic struck the world and brought life to a standstill, Guru Mohapatra, used the available resources to save the world of dance and dancers, who were dealing with lack of performances opportunities. Through Anuvartanam, he not only provided them with a platform to showcase their work, but ensured to bring them a global audience.

Through Anuvartanam, Guru Mohapatra, under his institute Srjan’s banner and collaborating with Sri Sri University, where he currently heads the Faculty of Art Communication and Indic Studies as Dean, vows to continue serving the Odishi community and helping the talented dancers, by organizing well attended events such as Anuvartanam.
