‘Recognise electricity workers as Covid warriors’

Thursday, 06 May 2021 | Kavi Vishnu Satpathy | BARIPADA

The Nesco Employees' Union has urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to recognise the electricity employees and workers as Covid warriors at the earliest. This would indeed be appropriated in view of the extraordinary service that they are rendering even in the face of all adversities during the Covid times, the union has stated.

A delegation led by union deputy general secretary Jyoti Krushna Nayak submitted a memorandum to this effect to Mayurbhanj district Collector Vineet Bharadwaj on Tuesday.

The memorandum addressed to and being sent to the Chief Minister hailed the State Government's decision to recognise several other groups of frontline Covid workers like healthcare professionals and mediapersons as Covid warriors and reward them accordingly.

The signatories to the memorandum, however, strongly felt the necessity of according the same status to the Nesco employees as well because, according to them, it is these people who work day and night to provide uninterrupted electricity supply and they do so against all odds and, sometimes, even risking their own lives.

So, the power employees do deserve special consideration for being declared Covid warriors; and in case an employee dies while on duty, the next of his/her kin should be provided a job, the memorandum said.

The employees expect something positive from the CM in this regard, union leader Nayak said.
