In the first phase of panchayat elections, as many as 11,749 candidates are in the fray in 779 wards for the posts of district panchayat members and for 19,313 posts of kshetra panchayat members 71,418 candidates are in the fray.
The State Election Commission said here on Wednesday that for the first phase of elections in 18 districts, 12,517 nomination papers were received for 779 wards of district panchayat members. Of these 223 papers were rejected and 175 withdrew their nominations leaving 11,749 candidates in the fray.
For 14,789 posts of village pradhans, 1,14,954 candidates had filed nomination papers of which 1,401 were rejected and 1,135 withdrew their papers. Now 1,08,562 candidates are in the fray for 14,789 posts.
The districts going to polls in the first phase are Ayodhya, Agra, Kanpur Nagar, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Jaunpur, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Bareilly, Bhadohi, Mahoba, Rampur, Rae Bareli, Shravasti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Saharanpur, Hardoi and Hathras. The polling will be held on April 15.
