The COVID-19 situation in the city is turning volatile with death tolls rising every day. At Tata Main Hospital alone 34 deaths have been reported in just four days. Those who died belonged to the age group of 40 to 79 years. About two third of those died belonged to the age group of 60 and above while 11 deaths were reported between 40 to 60 years.
The 11 deaths were mainly because of Covid pneumonia and took place within 48 hours of admission.
According to the authorities, the hospital situation is much worse than what it was last year. In the last four days alone, the positivity rate of RT-PCR has increased from 23.26 per cent to 76 per cent, while RAT positivity rate has shot up from 5.2 to 10.45 per cent.
Tata Main Hospital (TMH) has started operating 478 Covid beds out of these 328 beds comprising 54 ventilator beds are at the hospital premises while rest 150 are at GT Hostel 4.
Addressing a teleconference Dr Rajan Choudhry, advisor, medical services, Tata Steel informed that the second wave of Covid has hit the city hard. The situation is very serious in the city right now. Last four days have been the worst ever since the beginning of the pandemic. He informed that the virus is also hitting the hospital hard as 17 doctors of TMH have been tested Covid positive while 33 others have been exposed to the virus.
To contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of India started the COVID Vaccination programme on 16 January 2021. So far TMH has provided 25344 vaccinations and out of which 3029 have received both the doses. As per Workplace vaccination drive 819 persons have received the vaccination.
Vaccination is being made available to those eligible as per the existing guidelines of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. As per the government guidelines, all people above the age of 45 years, irrespective of the comorbidities, are eligible for vaccination from April 1. Advance appointments can be booked through cowin.gov.in.
“Even after vaccination, one must continue to follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour including wearing of mask, hand sanitisation, social distancing and avoid crowded places”, he added.
The advisor informed that the hospital also plans to add 35 new beds with oxygen facilities by Sunday.
