With the Covid-19 situation worsening, as many as 48 under-trial prisoners (UTPs) lodged at the Berhampur Circle Jail here have contracted the virus.
The jail authorities informed that swab samples of 84 UTPs had been sent for RT-PCR test two days ago and reports of 48 have come out positive.
Meanwhile, a 100-bed Covid Care Centre has been set up in the jail premises for the inmates, said jail Superintendent Garib Chandra Sahu. Currently, a total of 927 prisoners are lodged in the jail, he added.
Earlier in the first phase of the pandemic, several inmates of the jail had tested positive for the virus.
