AAP’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Pathankot on Dec 2

Stepping up its 2022 Punjab election campaign, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by its national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will hold “Tiranga Yatra” in Pathankot on December 2. Along with Kejriwal, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, besides senior party leadership from the State, will also be joining the yatra.Notably, AAP has been holding similar ‘Tiranga Yatras’ or tricolour march in other states also, especially four organises in the poll-bound state of Uttar Pradesh only, and receiving tremendous response. As the party is eyeing to expand its wings outside Delhi where it is heading the Government, Punjab has emerged on the top of its list.

AAP has already sounded the poll bugle in Punjab by organising a massive ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ at Moga’s Bagha Purana in March this year. After that, AAP supremo Kejriwal has been regularly visiting the State, and making pre-poll announcements for various categories.

The party is organising ‘Tiranga Yatra’ to galvanise the party cadre, besides making an effort to catch the attention of people, including the party’s workers and supporters from across the State.”As a part of the yatra, the party leaders and workers would carry the tricolours, and raise nationalist slogans such as ‘Vande Mataram’, ‘Jai Hind’. The similar yatra, organised in other states, has received massive response with large number of people also coming forward to participate. We are expecting a better response in Punjab,” AAp leader told The Pioneer. The party leader informed that the march would provide a stage for the party to apprise the people about their policies and promises. “The party’s all programmes and meetings are witnessing a considerable response, be it with traders, teachers, or autowalllahs,” said the party leader, adding that through this yatra, a new lease of energy would be infused among the party cadre.

Punjab is scheduled to go for assembly polls in January-February next year. And AAP is preparing to contest election on all 117 seats. However, absence of a strong leader in Punjab, who can be projected as its Chief Ministerial face, is hampering its poll campaign.

Even though the AAP chief has all along been claiming that party’s CM face would a Sikh and “on whom entire Punjab would be proud of”, the announcement is making the party leaders and cadre restless.

AAP, which was almost certain of forming the government in 2017, contested its first-ever assembly polls in Punjab under Kejriwal’s name, and managed to secure just 20 seats. Even though AAP emerged as the principal opposition party, it failed to perform as was expected. At that time, it was argued that lack of CM face, and strong state’s leadership were the major reason for the poll debacle.

A section of party leaders are of the view that in case AAP would again go to polls with Kejriwal as the face of party campaign, it would make a major dent in its votes.

AAP has already made a bunch of lucrative promises to the people of the state, including providing 300 units of free electricity in every household, free healthcare facilities in mohalla clinics, and Rs 1,000 to every woman in the State above 18 years of age.
