The mystery surrounding the death of RD University student Jharaphula Nayak seems to be unfolding gradually as another CCTV footage of the girl and her lover Rakesh Swain surfaced on Friday.
The video shows Rakesh, who was arrested by the Commissionerate police on Thursday in connection with the case, driving a scooter with Jharaphula riding the pillion.
A CCTV installed near a guesthouse at Dharma Vihar under the Khandagiri police limits, where the two had stayed, captured the video on January 27.
Earlier, a CCTV footage showing two youths carrying Jharaphula’s body on a scooter and later dumping it in the Kuakhia area in Jajpur district had come to the fore.
Meanwhile, accused Rakesh has confessed that he and Jharaphula were in a relationship and their love had started when he was engaged in laying underground pipes at Jashipur village in Mayurbhanj district during the Covid lockdown. He confessed that in January 26 morning, Jharaphula boarded a bus to Jashipur from Jayadev Vihar but later alighted at Vani Vihar Square.
She then walked to Rupali Square, where he was waiting for her on a scooter. After that, they checked in to a hotel and spent the night there having physical relationship.
Next morning, he found her in an unconscious state and got panicked.
He immediately called up his friend Shekhar, who reached the spot and both took Jharaphula by his scooter in the unconscious condition. Midway, after realising that she had died, the two dumped her body near Kuakhia.
