Around 12k Govt schools to get kitchen sheds

Friday, 17 September 2021 | PNS | Ranchi

Kitchen sheds and store rooms will be constructed in around 12,000 primary schools in Jharkhand where mid-day meals are cooked. This decision has been taken in the light of the Centre's directive which suggested that meals should be prepared in the school itself so that fresh food is supplied to the children.

These kitchens include construction of new sheds along with renovation of dilapidated kitchen sheds. Those schools where kitchen sheds have not been constructed since March 2010, will be taken in priority. These sheds will be constructed by Centre and State assistance. The Centre has already sanctioned Rs  726 lakh for construction of these kitchen sheds, while the state is yet to release its share. As per rough estimate for construction of a kitchen shed will cost Rs 60,000.

A senior official at the education department requesting anonymity said, “These kitchen sheds will be constructed on priority basis as classes in government schools will commence soon. As schools were closed during the lockdown period for the past one and half years, the condition of several kitchen sheds has become dilapidated.” The official further said, “Once the department gets the state assistance for the project, the construction and renovation of these kitchen sheds will commence.” As per mid day meal schemes students from class I to VIII are provided mid day meal and the food for students is prepared at school premises itself.

Out of total kitchen sheds which will be constructed the maximum sheds is at Dumka district where 1066 sheds will be constructed, followed by West Singhbhum where 1016 sheds will be constructed. Also 769 sheds will be constructed in East Singhbhum district, 725 in Hazaribag district, 644 sheds in Palamu district, 596 sheds in Ranchi district, 740 in Dhanbad among others.

With government issuing directive to reopen schools from class I to VIII, respective district administration has issued directives to make necessary arrangements.

Schools across the state have been ordered to repair furniture, clean and sanitize the classrooms for the remaining classes. Schools are likely to continue online classes along with offline classes. Presently, students of classes 9 to 12 are allowed to attend on-campus classes only with the consent of their parents. Jharkhand Schools will most likely follow the same set of guidelines and Covid 19 standard operating procedures (SoPs) for class 1 to 8 students.
