ATS busts gang supplying arms to Naxalites’

The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Jharkhand has busted a gang supplying arms to Naxalites and criminals across the country. The ATS has arrested five persons after the security agency carried out raids at different places in five States across the country. The ATS Jharkhand along with State police of Bihar, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh carried out raids at different places. Till date nine persons have been arrested in the entire operation. The arrested persons also include a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan and a retired jawan of the security agency.

The five arrested persons include Karthik Behera, the head constable of BSF-116 battalion of Ferozepur, Punjab. Apart from him, the arrested other persons include Arun Kumar Singh, who took voluntary retirement from BSF-114 battalion from Saran in Bihar, Kumar Gurlal Ochware from Madhya Pradesh, Shivlal Dhawan Singh Chauhan, Hirala Guman Singh Ochware. Arun Kumar Singh is said to be the mastermind of the gang.

Jharkhand ATS SP Prashant Anand and IG (Operation) AV Homkar sharing the information about ATS raid to media persons on Thursday said that the ATS have recovered more than 9,000 rounds of cartridges, 14 hi-tech pistols, 21 magazines and many other items from their possession.

IG campaign AV Homkar informed that the main centre of nexus was Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra border. The gang had complete setup in Buldhana district of Maharashtra and Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh. An arms factory was also set up there where arms were prepared and being supplied to different places through the gang’s network.

The IG operation further said that the gang used to supply arms to Naxalites and other organized criminals across the country including Jharkhand. ATS SP Prashant Anand said that the kingpin of this gang is Arun Kumar, who has taken voluntary retirement from BSF's 116 battalion.

IG told that many more links have been found from this gang. On the basis of this, other security agencies of the country are raiding many places. The ATS operation was led by ASP Kapil Chaudhary.

Prior to this, a week back the Jharkhand Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) nabbed three persons, including a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan posted in Pulwama, for supplying arms and ammunition to the CPI (Maoist) and other criminal organisations in the State.

The accused were identified as Avinash Kumar alias Chhunu Sharma, CRPF jawan posted with the 182nd Battalion, Rishi Kumar and Pankaj Kumar Singh. A total of 450 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition used in INSAS rifles were recovered based on their information.
