Superstitious belief has claimed life of yet another child in Nabarangpur district as a four -month-old tribal baby boy, who was branded with hot iron rod, died while undergoing treatment at the Tentulikhunti CHC in the district.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Muna, son of Trinath Nayak of Lokiguda village under Tentulikhunti block, was suffering from stomach pain, fever and cold. The infant’s parents had first taken him to the CHC, Tentulikhunti and later to the District Headquarters Hospital, Nabarangpur, for several times for treatment. However, there was no improvement in the baby’s health condition. Finding no way out, the parents finally took the baby to a local traditional healer (Disari), who branded him with hot iron rod at more than 20 places of his body.
The child sustained severe burn injuries, said Dr Sachikanta Lenka of Tentulikhunti CHC.It may be mentioned that to check recurrence of such incidents, earlier the district administration had taken up a 68-day-long awareness drive in all the 169 gram panchayats of the district involving 4,300 traditional healers and all other stakeholders. Nevertheless, the recurring incidences of branding have hinted that much more need to be done to end the menace.
