In a series of temple heists, unidentified miscreants decamped with gold ornaments and cash from donation boxes from four temples located under two different police stations in Basta block in Baleswar district on Tuesday night. According to reports, the miscreants looted gold ornaments worth about Rs 5 lakh and cash from donation boxes of Jagannath temple, Laxmi temple and Shiv temple housed in one campus in village Baliapati besides another Jagannath temple under the Basta police station  in the  neighboring village. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when the devotees during their visit to the temples found broken locks of the gates and  informed the local police.

On getting the information, Singla and Basta police registered cases and initiated a probe into the incidents. It may be noted that instances of loot from temples have been reported from across the district from time to time. The incidents mainly take place during the winter season when the miscreants target mainly  temples and ATM kiosks.
