BBMB to share its success with employees

Saturday, 30 January 2021 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to share its success with its employees. The Board has decided to dam up a part of its bonus for empowering the staff and their families in case of watershed in their lives.

To provide immediate relief to the families in case of death or a serious injury of an employee during the service period, the BBMB has decided to set up an Employees’ Family Support Fund — a historical move for the employees welfare which comes more than half a century after the Board’s inception in 1967.

“It is a very historical initiative and we would establish the BBMB Employees’ Family Support Fund as a society. It is in the last leg, and in a couple of weeks, it will be implemented,” said BBMB’s Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer Rajinder Kumar while talking with The Pioneer.

As per the decision, financial support of Rs five lakh would be provided to the family of an employee in case of his death in an accident “on duty”. In case of natural death or “physical damage” during the service period, the employee’s family will be provided Rs one lakh.

Taken aback by the death of its two employees, including a young engineer, in May 2019 followed by financial hardships faced by his family, the BBMB has decided to come up with a policy or a scheme for its employees’ welfare.

“At that time, we, unfortunately, did not have any policy, scheme, or fund as such through which we can provide financial help to that family. Then, BBMB set up a committee and I was given a special task as its head. We worked for almost one year and we have created a fund.

The decision would provide financial security to the families of its total 7,500 employees — right from Class I to the workers’ level — except those who are re-employed after retirement or engaged from outsourcing agencies.

Giving details, Kumar said that the Funds would take no contributions from the BBMB employees, and in fact, it would use the “bonus” it gets from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for “over-achieving” the targets.

“Annually, CEA gives us the target for power generation annually. And every time we over-achieve the targets, BBMB, as per a set formula, gets a bonus amount towards the Fund. We have been doing it for the past two years. So that there’s no burden on any individual,” said Kumar, adding that in case of any requirement of Funds, we have kept all options available to replenish it.

He informed that at present, an amount of Rs six crore has been collected.

E-OFFICE IMPLEMENTED FOR EMPLOYEES’ WELFARE

BBMB has also implemented e-office, a Mission Mode Project within the Central Government’s National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), for enhancing productivity, quality of service of transparency and for paperless digital systems. Talking about his department, Kumar said that e-office has proved a boon for the BBMB employees who have retired and are retiring as it has helped in expediting the pension cases. “In case of GPF, medical claims, among others, the entire case has to be processed within five days. As of now, no pension case is pending,” he added.
