Bid to torch family for changing religion, five booked

Monday, 04 January 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

The police booked five people for trying to burn a family alive which had recently converted to another religion in Rae Bareli, late on Saturday night.

The incident was reported from Rataso village in Salon block. As per reports, some anti-social elements torched the house of Dev Prakash Patel at around 2 am. He had recently converted from Islam to Hinduism.

However, no one was injured in the incident as the victim and his family members ran to safety but their property were gutted.

The miscreants had locked the doors of the house from outside after setting the house on fire, but somehow, Dev Prakash managed to break the window to escape along with his children.

Police said local gram pradhan Rehan and four others were charged for the incident but they were on the run.

According to the incident, Mohammad Anwar on September 2 had converted to Hinduism along with his three children. Thereafter, he had changed his name to Dev Prakash Patel while his five-year-old son Rehan was named as Devnath, four-year-old Ali as Deendayal and three-year-old daughter Khushi as Durga Devi.

Dev Prakash’s wife had died a year back and he was assisted financially by his Hindu neighbours to feed his family as he was poor.

After the family converted to Hinduism, they had received several threats in the past.

Meanwhile, several Hindu organisations threatened to launch a massive protest against the incident and demanded stern action against the culprits.

The organisations alleged that the local officials were not changing the names of the victim ,who had changed his name from Mohammad Anwar to Dev Prakash Patel.
